About Us
'Iwa bird inspiration
The 'Iwa (pronounced eee-vah) correlates to our creative philosophy of exploration, possibility and discovery through art. We view art as an essential language for exploring ideas, possibility in what may be revealed in the process and the discovery of personal creative potential.
The 'Iwa (or Frigate bird) are renowned navigational symbols. With their enormous wingspan, 'Iwa travel for weeks offshore, gliding gracefully on the wind currents to explore great distances in the open ocean.
'Iwa Arts & Cafe ventures beyond a traditional coffee shop in search of a more enriching experience for patrons. We host Independent Working Artists (IWA) who create their artwork on-site and invite dialogue.
Poke your head in to gain a new appreciation for all the work that goes into a fine piece of jewelry, painting or handcrafted piece of furniture. Maybe you'll be inspired to learn a new skill in one of our workshops!
Our Vision
We are a creative sanctuary
Cozy up and enjoy a hot cup of coffee, fresh bread and treats in our tranquil garden. Soak in the beautiful artwork in the gallery. We strive to be a positive and welcoming place for locals, travelers and families to relax and connect through delicious, lovingly prepared food and drinks.
We believe everyone harbors a creative fire within. Providing a space to quietly reflect, observe, connect, and create stokes that fire. No person is more or less qualified to call themselves an artist. Each person is creative in their own way and all forms of creative expression have value.
Our rotating workshops highlight the talent of local artists and expose our customers to new ways of making. We bring people together to nurture their creative spark and encourage self-expression.

We make our food with the healthiest ingredients available, from local and/or organic farms whenever possible. We insist that the items in our shop are either handmade, upcycled, or fair trade.
Building History
Honuaino Square
Our lovely building has been in the same family since the 1800's, founded in 1859 by the late Henry Weeks; carpenter, blacksmith, farrier and canoe builder. Henry's son later opened the Week's Garage, a South Kona landmark for many years.
Henry's descendants continue to oversee and perpetuate their family legacy of pride, honor and partnership with the community. Henry's great-grandchildren, owners & caretakers of the property, have been supportive in advocating for the intention of 'Iwa and our far-reaching goals.
Our vision to honor the past and inspire the future is nestled perfectly on these historic grounds. In the coming year, the former blacksmith and woodworking studio will be revived with some original, historical tools in use and on display.
